Director: Robert Luketic Stars: Katherine Heigl, Ashton Kutcher (Full Cast) Studio: Lionsgate The Plot: Three years into their perfectly suburban marriage, Jen (Heigl) learns that her husband Spencer (Kutcher) is not only an undercover assassin -- he's also a target worth millions of dollars to a clutch of fellow assassins who have been trailing the couple in secret since they met. THE BUZZ: Perhaps a more timely plot would center on the union of an outspoken actress and her twitter-obsessed husband who tweets all the gooeyness of their marriage to his millions of followers, which is a nice way of saying the law of box-office averages will apply to this rehash of Mr. and Mrs. Smith and every movie set in the suburbs. Director: Tom Dey Stars: Owen Wilson, Judy Greer, Lee Pace (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: The Winslow family moves to a new neighborhood with their large yet lovable Great Dane, who has a tendency to wreak havoc in his own oblivious way. THE BUZZ: If Twentieth Century-Fox can turn Alvin in the Chipmunks into a box-office smash worthy of a sequel, it's no wonder the studio is strip mining the funny pages for more family movies. Owen Wilson is the main casualty here, once he signed on to voice the lovable dog, his stock plummeted with those of us who love him most as a writer and ace supporting player. Director: Joe Carnahan Stars: Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Sharlto Copley (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: A group of Iraq War veterans looks to clear their name with the U.S. military, who suspect the four men of committing a crime for which they were framed. THE BUZZ: S.W.A.T. was a rather huge success several years ago, so there's no reason another beloved old school TV show can't rule the box office for a while, especially in the hands of a fanboy approved director and cast (who would have ever thought Liam Neeson would be an action star?). And hopefully there will be a barrage of CGI-free stunts and inspired cameos. Why do I feel as though we'll see a sequel to this in 2012? Director: Nicholas Stoller Stars: Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, Elisabeth Moss (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: A record company intern (Hill) is hired to accompany out-of-control British rock star Aldous Snow (Brand) to a concert at L.A.'s Greek Theater. THE BUZZ: A spin-off that features the obnoxious character from an underwhelming movie ... unfortunately, this comedy seems ripe for bad press and diminishing returns from those who half-hugged Forgetting Sarah Marshall. And something tells me Judd Apatow will be revisiting his greatest hits for potential sequels (i.e. look for Anchorman 2 to be officially greenlit this year) before his superproducer crown loses anymore luster. Director: Harald Zwart Stars: Jackie Chan, Jaden Smith, Taraji P. Henson (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: Work pressures cause a single mother (Henson) to move to China with her young son (Smith); in his new home, the boy embraces karate, taught to him by a master of the self-defense form (Chan). THE BUZZ: I'm not outright against this remake -- the original is vintage at over 25 years old -- I just wish the second coming of Daniel Larusso had been subject to an open casting of kids instead of custom fit to Will and Jada Pinkett Smith's son, Jaden. (Both dad and mom are producing the movie, too.) Also, Harald Zwart has 5 movies before this one, none of them good. Director: Lee Unkrich Stars: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen (Full Cast) Studio: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures The Plot: Woody (Hanks), Buzz (Allen), and the rest of their toy-box friends are dumped in a day-care center after their owner, Andy, departs for college.
THE BUZZ: Easily one of the biggest movies of 2010, the secret weapon here is screenwriter Michael Arndt, who wrote Little Miss Sunshine; his sentimentality is evident in the trailer, which causes Rex-sized lumps in our throat. Director: Jimmy Hayward Stars: Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: The U.S. military gives bounty hunter Jonah Hex (Brolin) and offer he cannot refuse: in exchange for his freedom from the warrants on his head, he's to take down a terrorist (Malkovich) who is gathering an army and preparing to unleash Hell on Earth.
THE BUZZ: The comic-reading boys I grew up with cannot believe the Weird Western Tales antihero has his own movie, but 2010 really is the year that Hollywood is testing how many layers deep they can go into comic-book and generate hit movies. The cast is brassy and generates their own publicity at every turn, and the sequel options are plenty (in the comics, Hex is blasted into the 21st century). Sure it sounds a bit like Sergio Leone meets Hellboy, but what's wrong with that? Also, metal band Mastodon is scoring the film, which excites me more than anything. Director: Stars: Chace Crawford (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Pictures The Plot: A drama where a city guy (Crawford) winds up in a small town where rock 'n' roll and dancing are banned. THE BUZZ: As of this writing, Kenny Ortega just jumped ship and Hustle and Flow director is circling the project; meanwhile, Chace Crawford is working hard to become the second coming of Ren McCormack. Paramount is said to fashioning the project into more of a drama and less of a musical. Can we assume, if they butch it up a bit, maybe Crawford will look less airbrushed, pink, and waxy as he does on the current season of "Gossip Girl?" Perhaps he won't have to cover up all of his tattoos, too ... Message Boards: Amanda Bynes for Rusty | Hunter Parrish only choice for Ren! Director: Dennis Dugan Stars: Adam Sandler, Salma Hayek, Kevin James (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: Thirty years after their high school graduation, five good friends and their families reunite for a Fourth of July weekend.
THE BUZZ: Adam Sandler didn't have much luck with Judd Apatow, but his success with director Dennis Dugan is nearly unparalleled. Together, with plenty of their famous, lovable friends and colleagues in tow (and Rob Schneider) they appear to be channeling 80s-era family comedy and trafficking in the getting-older themes of which Sandler has become so fond. Meanwhile, is Kevin James, in Chris Farley mode, the real draw here?
