THE BUZZ: Ten years ago, Gwyneth Paltrow was a recent Oscar winner and comic-book movies weren't even on Hollywood's radar. Even five years ago, who would've expected one of the most anticipated movies of the year would be a second-tier comics property starring two hard-living actors experiencing an industry rebirth. The only aspect of this sequel which gives me (and plenty of others) pause is the presence of multiple villains; hopefully Marvel has learned the error of their Spider-Man 3 ways in this respect.

The Plot: A bored and domesticated Shrek (Myers) pacts with deal-maker Rumpelstiltskin (McCartney) to get back to feeling like a real ogre again, but when he's duped and sent to a twisted version of Far Far Away -- where Rumpelstiltskin is king, ogres are hunted, and he and Fiona (Diaz) have never met -- he sets out to restore his world and reclaim his true love.

THE BUZZ: Shrek seems set for a fifth (and final?) adventure, but the movie's Puss in Boots spin-off, which was once set to go direct-to-DVD but is instead attracting A-listers both established (Selma Hayek) and still dewey behind the ears (Zach Galifianakis). More than anything, it's taking the story back to the days before the yawningly received third chapter.

THE BUZZ: Thanks to all forms of the modern press, it feels as though almost every intimate detail of this edition of SaTC is known, assumed, hotly rumored, what have you. Good ideas (trimming the run time to make the sequel feel more episodic) are mixed with potentially bad ones (economic woes? new meat in the form of myriad suitors as well as Miley Cyrus?). Back when Carrie Bradshaw used to write, she might have said something like: In the multiplex of life, can a sequel live up to the original, or are we just trying to recapture what's best left to DVD?
