Director: Lasse Hallström Stars: Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried, Richard Jenkins (Full Cast) Studio: Screen Gems The Plot: A romantic drama about a soldier (Tatum) who falls for a co-ed (Seyfried) while he's home on leave. Their relationship is tested in the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks, an event that causes him to re-enlist for service. THE BUZZ: Lasse Hallstrom is a perfect director pick for this adaptation of the novel by Nicholas Sparks, the John Grisham of romantic drama. Herein, Channing Tatum earns a chance to flex his dramatic abdominals, Amanda Seyfried wipes away her tears for what will be her weepy year (get ready for her Letters to Juliet in May), and Richard Jenkins lines up a potential second Oscar nomination for his part as supportive parent. Director: Joe Johnston Stars: Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: Nobleman Lawrence Talbot (Del Toro) returns to his ancestral homeland, where his brother has gone missing and villagers are being killed by a nightmarish beast. The search reunites him with his estranged father (Hopkins) and draws him near to his brother's fiancée (Blunt), however, Talbot's lager concern is the discovery of a side to himself which he never could have imagined existed ...
THE BUZZ: An iconic monster is resuscitated, and the industry is wondering: How will this measured approach to horror filmmaking translate with modern audiences? It's been a guessing game for Universal, who took it off the spring 09 calendar at the end of 2008, then moved it to VDay 2010 toward the end of summer 2009 -- the holiday is typically kind to horror films, however and I feel like Benicio Del Toro will be the pop-culture talk of the season. Mostly I hope that the picture will rekindle the movie-going public's affection for Emily Blunt (ditto Agent Smith, who plays the role of Det. Aberline, which was not a part of the 1941 original). Director: Garry Marshall Stars: Julia Roberts, Jamie Foxx, Anne Hathaway (Full Cast) Studio: New Line Cinema The Plot: Intertwining couples and singles in Los Angeles break-up and make-up based on the pressures and expectations of Valentine's Day.
THE BUZZ: New Line Cinema, working for Warner Bros. here, looks to repeat their He's Just Not That Into You success by hauling that movie's formula across country. The project lost Katherine Heigl in transport but replaced her with every other top actress who was not in the aforementioned movie. Can we hope for a little edge and unexpected plot turns here? Maybe a "hard PG-13"? Message Boards: Joe Jonas' role | Who's the guy in the red shirt in the trailer? Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews

Director: Chris Columbus Stars: Logan Lerman, Kevin McKidd, Steve Coogan (Full Cast) Studio: Fox 2000 Pictures The Plot: Life changes in an instant for troubled 12-year-old Percy Jackson (Lerman) when he learns his birth father is the god Poseidon and he's looped in on a cross-country mission to settle a feud between his dad, Zeus, and Hades. THE BUZZ: Harry Potter is going out of business, and Hollywood still hasn't found his successor. The Lightning Thief is book one in Rick Riordan's series of five proper novels to date; can Philsopher's Stone director Chris Columbus put this franchise into motion? The young adult in all of us could use a new hero, and Columbus's career needs a renaissance as well. Message Boards: Cabin 3 | Too Old!! Director: Glenn Ficarra John Requa Stars: Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, Leslie Mann (Full Cast) Studio: Consolidated Pictures Group The Plot: On his second go-round behind bars, scam artist Steven Russell (Carrey) commits the ultimate con in order to break out and win back the heart of Phillip Morris (McGregor), with whom he fell in love during his first prison sentence.
THE BUZZ: The major studios didn't touch this movie, even though it played well with Sundance audiences of all stripes. It's as though the apparent difficulty in marketing a gay-themed film trumps the presence of A-List stars and worshipped Bad Santa screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa joining up to adapt and direct this true story. Consolidated Pictures Group, who did a wonderful job with Bottle Shock, snapped up the movie months after the festival, and I hope they've used the better part of the year since the acquisition to put an ace marketing plan in place? Releasing it on Valentine's Day weekend is a great start. Message Boards: did Philip Morris tobacco fund this? | nooooooooo! Director: Gary Trousdale Kirk Wise Stars: Paige O'Hara, Robby Benson (Full Cast) Studio: Buena Vista Pictures The Plot: Belle is a girl who is dissatisfied with life in a small provincial French town, constantly trying to fend off the misplaced "affections" of conceited Gaston. The Beast is a prince who was placed under a spell because he could not love. A wrong turn taken by Maurice, Belle's father, causes the two to meet.
THE BUZZ: Currently, Disney is creating new hand-drawn animated movies while simultaneously converting a handful of their classic features into 3D for re-release. Cyclical genius. The Toy Story double feature was a hit the second time around; something tells me Beauty's appeal might be even more far-reaching. Director: Jacques Audiard Stars: Tahar Rahim (Full Cast) Studio: Sony Pictures Classics The Plot: A young Arab man (Rahim) serving time in a French prison transforms into a mafia kingpin.
THE BUZZ: Director Jacques Audiard is virtually unknown in the States, but his epic mob drama, which won the British Film Festival's first-ever Best Film Award, is poised to change all that -- even if the Academy pulls a Gomorrah and fails to nominate the French film for the best foreign film Oscar. Look for Tahar Rahim's name to appear more on this side of the Atlantic; next up for the actor is another epic turn in Kevin Macdonald's The Eagle of the Ninth. Get in depth here. Director: Martin Scorsese Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Emily Mortimer, Mark Ruffalo (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Pictures The Plot: When a psychotic killer (Mortimer) disappears from a mental institution on Shutter Island, a pair of U.S. Marshals (Ruffalo and DiCaprio) race against the clock in order to track her down.
THE BUZZ: Strike through all those notions of awards-season glamor for this reunion of Marty and Leo, since reports of marketing-budget shortfalls and promotional challenges (aka DiCaprio's availability) shuttled the movie into the middle of winter. Don't think it'll hurt the thriller's box-office, though, since it's been testing through the roof. Nikki Finke digs out the scoop. Director: John Luessenhop Stars: Matt Dillon, Paul Walker, Idris Elba (Full Cast) Studio: Screen Gems The Plot: A hard-boiled detective (Dillon) gets in between a group of bank robbers and their plan to make away with a $20 million bounty. THE BUZZ: Matt Dillon is back on the right side of the law after Armored, but the real question here is: How do you promote a movie featuring one currently incarcerated musician/actor (T.I.) and Chris Brown, the R&B star who, at the time of this writing, is about to face two felony charges stemming from his fight with his still-girlfriend, Rihanna? Suddenly, heist movies don't seem fun anymore. Message Boards: Sooo Much Eye Candy! | Stealing another script-movie Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews

Director: Pierre Morel Stars: John Travolta, Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Full Cast) Studio: Lionsgate The Plot: In Paris, a young employee in the office of the US Ambassador (Myers) hooks up with an American spy (Travolta) looking to stop a terrorist attack in the city.
THE BUZZ: Why do I suspect Lionsgate is eyeing this as a potential franchise, since it brings to mind buddy action-comedies of yesterday such as Lethal Weapon and the now-ten-years-old Shanghai Noon? With the Taken/Transporter creative team behind the camera, one thing is for sure: this will be much more entertaining Travolta-in-action adventure than the clanging, repellant, and underperforming Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. That said, while the influence of American heroes in Paris is a bit questionable, I'd rather see producer Luc Besson play around with Hollywood cliches here than blow out the storyline in his excellent District 13 saga. Director: Breck Eisner Stars: Radha Mitchell, Timothy Olyphant, Danielle Panabaker (Full Cast) Studio: Overture Films The Plot: An updated version of George Romero's 1973 cult fave about a virus that spreads throughout a town, causing its residents to go insane, riot and kill each other. Director: Kevin Smith Stars: Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: A comedy about two cops (Willis and Jordan) whose adventures include locating a stolen baseball card, rescuing a woman, and dealing with gangsters and their laundered money. THE BUZZ: Yes, so this is first time Kevin Smith has directed someone else's screenplay; like that is a bad thing? We love the big man and his writing, but the idea of him simply injecting some profanity into a blacklisted script has us a-gog. And phew on this turning into Bruce Willis' umpteenth career renaissance instead of a Robin Williams-starring non-starter. By mixing together some of TV's best performers (we of course love Tracy Jordan for "30 Rock" but really Dicks supporter Michelle Trachtenberg kills it as Georgina on "Gossip Girl") with a clutch of his old cronies, Smith's hard-R, buddy-cop, action-comedy could become a winter version of a summer blockbuster.
