On 'Biggest Loser,' Health Takes a Back Seat

When more than 40 former contestants from “The Biggest Loser” gather Wednesday for a reunion television special, the winner of the program’s first season, Ryan C. Benson, who lost 122 of his 330-pound starting weight, will be absent.
Mr. Benson is now back above 300 pounds but he thinks he has been shunned by the show because he publicly admitted that he dropped some of the weight by fasting and dehydrating himself to the point that he was urinating blood.

Joost Acquired by Online Ad Network Adconion

Joost’s been put out of its misery and its assets have been acquired by Santa Monica, California-based online ad network Adconion Media Group.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but likely would have been pennies on the dollar, compared to the money that was invested in the once much-hyped online video service. Adconion is also part funded by Joost backed Index Ventures.

TiVo Beats Wall Street Expectations

While reporting quarterly financial results that bested expectations, TiVo said Tuesday it will become a primary supplier of DVR software to Virgin Media UK, giving it access to about 4 million consumers.
TiVo CEO Tom Rogers also boasted that its longtime association with Comcast could be close to bearing some more-meaningful fruit now that technological hurdles have been met and the giant cabler is marketing TiVo again in certain parts of the country.

Fueled by solid World Series ratings, as well as consistent performances from series including “House,” “The Cleveland Show,” “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Glee,” Fox won its first ever November sweeps, and won it in convincing fashion.

The reality competition show returns for its ninth season with a two-night premiere Tuesday, Jan. 12, from 8-10 p.m. and Wednesday, Jan. 13, from 8-9 p.m.

Fall Shows Boost Hulu's Traffic

Fueled by the fall TV season and the addition of ABC shows to its library, traffic to Hulu -- the video site backed by NBC, ABC and Fox -- spiked nearly 47% in October from the prior month, the biggest single-month percentage gain of the past year.
Hulu served 856 million video streams during the month, up from 583 million in September, according to comScore Video Metrix. Unique visitors were also up nearly 10% to 42.5 million, from 38.7 million in September. Minutes per viewer were also up substantially, to 123 minutes from 92 minutes in September.

Washington Post to Close Bureaus in N.Y., L.A.,Chicago

The Washington Post is closing its remaining U.S. news bureaus in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, but will retain the six reporters from those bureaus and recall them to Washington. The paper's spokesperson, Kris Coratti, confirmed the closures Tuesday. Three news aides, one per each bureau, will be cut. Bad Quarter in the Books: B&N, Borders Post Losses

Report: Palin's 'Going Rogue' Sold 700K Copies in First Week

Sarah Palin's "Going Rogue" sold 700,000 copies — a number that includes pre-orders — in its first week of release, a publishing figure close to the former Alaska governor told The Associated Press. The person was not authorized to release the sales figure and asked not to be identified. Palin's memoir came out Nov. 17 with a first printing of 1.5 million copies. On Friday, publisher HarperCollins announced that the printing would be increased to 2.5 million.

Tyler Perry Gifts $1M to NAACP

Filmmaker Tyler Perry has donated $1 million to the NAACP to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the civil rights organization.
