Comedy Central seems to be pretty hungry for comedian-run sketch shows lately. They recently premiered the pilot of The Jeff Dunham Show to lukewarm reception, and another show starring Gabriel Iglesias and Bill Engvall is on the way. Earlier this week, yet another show was announced, in the form of a pilot for a show starring comedian Nick Swardson.
Swardson has made his way around the stand up circuit for years now, but most people will remember him from his supporting roles in Grandma’s Boy, Benchwarmers, and You Don’t Mess With The Zohan (he must be liked by the Sandler camp).
The network is apparently more than happy to add Swardson’s creativity to the growing camp of Comedy Central’s original programming. From The Hollywood Reporter:
“We love Nick at Comedy Central and even more importantly, our audience loves Nick,” said Comedy Central programming president Lauren Corrao. »

The last airing of The Beautiful Life on September 23 delivered a 0.5 A18-49 rating and 1 million total viewers. The CW will replace the series with repeat episodes of Melrose Place in the Wednesday 9p time period starting this week. • TBS cancelled its comedy The Bill Engvall Show starring comedian Bill Engvall and Nancy Travers. The show ran for 30 episodes over three years. • After completing its second season earlier this month, A&E Network decided to not renew the drama series The Cleaner, starring Benjamin Bratt for a third season. The Cleaner was A&E's first scripted series is more than six years, originating on the network in July 2008.

As much as I want to mark down Hank, the new Kelsey Grammar sitcom, as the first cancellation of the season, I can't help but wonder if this show could actually end up finding an audience at ABC. The Pros include the past success Grammar has found on television and the fact that the series is written by Everybody Loves Raymond's award winning Tucker Cawley. The Cons are, well…lets just say it doesn't compare at all to most of the other sitcoms hitting the small screen this season. But that could end up being exactly how it stands out. Family comedy sitcoms seemed to be a dead genre the past few yaers, and I even recall quite a few networks and journalists making fun of Bill Engvall for launching just such a sitcom several years ago. But now they're back in again, with ABC alone debuting Hank, The Middle, »

Let's make sure we're all on the same page before we dive into our recap of last night's results. You dumped Acrodunk...but pushed The Voices of Glory. You sent Paradizo Dance, two enormously talented acrobatic dancers, home...so you could watch Grandma Lee tell the same moderately humorous joke she's been telling for two months. Again. What?! Worst of all is the fact that you took all of those voting cues from this man: Who do I have to see to get a Xanax around here? The first half -- and a little extra! -- of the final eight contestants was selected last night, and it's hardly the assembly any merit-based program would want to promote. I mean, there's Fab Five (you chose wisely) and Kevin Skinner and Texas Tenors, all three of whom fairly well deserved their advancement (and were pretty much a lock, anyway). But again, you »

Despite heavy promotion, The Comedy Central Roast of Joan Rivers was down 32% in the ratings compared to its last roast of Larry the Cable Guy. Most of the blame for the poor ratings is being shifted to Espn which had the Yankees-Red Sox game on at the same time.
In general, it seems like the roasts are declining in the ratings. Joan got less than Larry who got less than Pamela Anderson who got less than Bill Engvall. Perhaps America is just getting sick of "C" level celebrity roasting (even though that level is probably all Comedy Central could afford).
For me, the roasts are kind of hit-and-miss. I liked the Shatner roast, and I caught some of the Joan Rivers roast and found it to be underwhelming. What do you think? Did you like the Joan Rivers roast? Do you think Comedy Central should lay off the whole roasting concept for a little while? »

San Diego Comic-Con is on and in full force! So, as the tumbleweeds blow across the City of Angels, The 13th Annual La Shorts Film Festival began Thursday night with...a little bit less than a bang. Some prominent Hollywood women, however, are showcasing their talents with world premieres of their directorial debuts: These Vagabond Shoes stars a-now-completely-broke-thanks-to-Bernie-Madoff Kevin Bacon and is directed by Scarlett Johansson. The Spleenectomy stars Anna Faris, and leaves a scar as the first film directed by Kirsten Smith. Smith is a Hollywood screenwriter and producer whose credits include 10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde, The House Bunny, summer's newest rom-com, The Ugly Truth. The Monday Before Thanksgiving stars Laura Dern and Courteney Cox. This short is Cox's directorial debut, not including David Arquette's wardrobe. If I were to place my bets, I'd say that 1) the film is set in the spring, and 2) because Laura Dern is in it, it »

Last year's champ, Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock"), will probably face off again opposite perennial nominees Steve Carell ("The Office") and Charlie Sheen ("Two and a Half Men"), who've never won, and three-time champ Tony Shalhoub ("Monk"). That means there will be room for two more nominees. If an Emmy god exists, one of the picks will be Jim Parsons ("The Big Bang Theory"). The other? Maybe David Duchovny ("Californication"), who was robbed of a bid last year. Lee Pace got nominated in 2008 but probably won't be back considering that the canceled "Pushing Daisies" has wilted.

We got excited over the photos and made a wishlist, but the result was even better than we thought. On last night’s Cmt Music Awards, Taylor Swift and T-Pain opened the show with a pre-taped video for “Thug Story,” a rap very reminiscent of the Natalie Portman rap from a few years ago. Swift identifies herself as “T-Swizzle” and makes boasts like “You can find me making cookies at night/You out clubbing? I just made caramel delights” and “You don’t wanna fight me/In my extra-small white tees.” Swift’s mom even makes a cameo when she raps “I still live with my parents.” Pain Auto-Tunes along with Swift, and even when the track breaks down at the end, he’s still talking with pitch correction.
The T-Pain video appeared as part of the show’s cold open, where Swift and host Bill Engvall talked about her »

A video which features Taylor Swift joining forces with T-Pain has been aired during 2009 Cmt Music Awards on June 16, and it is all over the web soon afterwards. Brad's first victory came from Male Video of the Year category for "Waitin' on a Woman". "[Andy Griffith] was the perfect man to pass wisdom. He has passed wisdom his whole life to all of us. ... He has changed my life in so many ways, and to be on film with him, you can imagine what that would be like," Brad praised Andy for portraying the lead character on his video.
Brad also won Collaborative Video of the Year, sharing the prize with Keith Urban. "Thank you so much, the fans, for taking a song all about playing the guitar and making it something that radio made a No. »
